Wise Guys Finish Last
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:13
Growing up, I often heard the phrase, "nice guys finish last." Maybe you have heard it too. The implication is that if you are nice and let people walk all over you, you are never going to get ahead in life. The world encourages us to fight and scrap to get what's ours, often times at any cost. Society suggests that the "good life" is the logical conclusion of a life that looks out only for number one.
James challenged his readers to think differently. He suggested that wise guys finish last. The good life is one where deeds are done in humility, by putting others first. His teaching echoes that of Christ who often suggested that we take the last and lowest seat at the table and allow the host (God) to move us up in rank and honor. Jesus also said that the first shall be last. James probably also had the same coach that I did, who used to say all the time, "Talk is cheap. Back up what you say on the field or simply let your performance do the talking for you." James said people demonstrate their wisdom and understanding by doing deeds with humility.
